Homeowner's surveillance camera, social media campaign catches burglary suspects

A Pittsboro man's home surveillance camera and Facebook page have helped lead investigators to the suspects.

After catching two burglars on a surveillance camera inside his home, Matt Schubert not only asked for help from police and Fox59 News, but he also asked his social network. Now, just days after creating a Facebook page called "Break In Pittsboro, IN" he can't believe how that network responded.
 
"Within 36 hours I received more than 500 emails," Schubert said. "It just kept blowing up, going viral."
 
"When we have actual video, clear video of these two suspects inside a residence, it's just great," said Lieutenant Jim Yetter of the Hendricks County Sheriff's Department.
 
Investigators said it's also great that Schubert made the images easily available because the community shared them across their own networks, producing immediate results.
 
"In this particular case it helped us find these two guys and identify them within hours of putting it out," Yetter said.
 
The two suspects are Jared Wells and Derek Wethington, two young men around twenty years old. They were arrested for burglary and theft in Boone County.
 
Schubert said he was relieved to hear about the arrest but surprised again, after hearing that his family had a connection to one of the suspects.
 
"(Wells) is one of our kids childhood friends, which makes it hard," Schubert said.
 
Since the arrest, Matt said the Facebook page has helped in a different way. This time he said it's helped everyone begin to heal.
 
Derek Wethington's brother made a public wall posting saying, "I want to apologize to Matt and Dawn for my brother's violation of your home. I know its not for me to apologize for him but our family isn't like this. This has been a real blow to us. I would have never guessed my brother would do something like this."
 
Schubert said he's received similar comments from the families of both suspects via Facebook.
 
"Their response has been, not only warm and outreaching towards us, but also that you can see the pain in their hearts," Schubert said.
