In honor of Arbor Day Friday, the Department of Natural Resources announced the creation of the Indiana Tree Project.
The inaugural planting of trees for the project will take place May 4 at the Morgan-Monroe State Forest.
The goal is to plant 1 million new trees in Hoosier forests by 2016.
The DNR is asking for a $10 donation, which covers the land, the sapling, planting and maintenance of the site.
"Indiana used to be almost entirely covered by trees and most of those trees are obviously gone and trees have an incredible benefit. They clean water, they clean air, and they provide great economic benefit and places for recreation, "said Bourke Patton, Executive Director of the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation
The project will also plant trees at several other locations throughout the year.
More information about how to donate is available online.
