Jackson County authorities investigating abduction attempt

Police in Jackson County are looking for a man they said tried to abduct a young girl.

Jackson County, Ind.

An attempted abduction in rural Jackson County has officers on the lookout and a mother fearing for her family's safety.

"The most prized possession I will ever obtain in life is my kids," said Carolyn Bowman, who's five-year-old daughter disappeared briefly Tuesday night.

Bowman said she was leaving the house to take a drive with her little girl just before 6 p.m. Tuesday night. As her daughter walked down to the driveway to get into the family van, Bowman went back inside the home to grab a bag of trash. A minute later her daughter was gone.

"Somebody came up to me and picked me up by the hair," said Bowman's daughter, whose name is not being used to protect her iedentity. "Then he threw me in the air to hold my body and then he started running off in the road with me all the way to the black mailbox."

That mailbox is a few hundred yards from the family home and Bowman's daughter says the only reason the man stopped there is because they heard Bowman yell her name when she rushed outside. That's when she says the man dropped her on the road and ran into the woods between two nearby homes.

"We figured whoever he was either lives close; or he parked out somewhere, maybe along (road) 135; or had someone drive around. We saw a white SUV circle around several times," Bowman said.

Despite a search of the area neither the family, neighbors, nor the Jackson County Sheriff's Department have been able to locate the man.

But Bowman's daughter did offer a description. Jackson County officers are looking for an older white man who is either bald or has short brown hair, a brown mustache and is wearing a yellow shirt and tan shorts.

"I said, 'Why are you taking me?'" Bowman's daughter said. "And he said, 'Because I like children.'"

"Just seconds later and I would have lost my child for ever I'm sure," Bowman said. "I mean, this man had no good intentions."

Though Bowman said she is happy to still have her prized possession by her side, but she said the man has taken something from everyone in the neighborhood.

"I'm not going to feel safe like I did before," Bowman said. "I hope and I pray that they're caught, and soon, before there is an incident that happens that is a lot worse."

The night before the attempted abduction Bowman said the entire family heard someone walking on the porch outside their house.
