A Greek Orthodox priest in Carmel will soon become one of the church's most influential members.

Father Anastasio Gounaris has been chosen to become the next dean of the Greek Orthodox's National Cathedral in New York City.

Gounaris will become the highest ranking married Greek orthodox priest in America.

He knows his 20 years here will serve him well.

"Well I feel that over the past 20 years, with God's grace and the love and assistance of the wonderful people of this parish, that I’ve picked up a lot of experience,” said Gounaris. “I feel that now I can apply much of this hard learned experience to the national stage."

Gounaris will become dean on June 1, which means he will be able to celebrate Holy Week with parishioners at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
