A woman formerly employed at the Marion County Clerk's Office faces charges of forgery and theft after more than $8,000 was discovered to be missing.

Shelia Lang, 64, faces 10 counts of forgery and one count of theft.

Lang, who worked as a senior account tech employee, admitted to taking the money in “order to survive,” according to the probable cause affidavit.

When questioned by authorities, Lang stated she was demoted from a supervisory position, which resulted in a $6,000 a year pay cut.  She said she took the money in order to pay for food and utilities.

Lang is accused of stealing approximately $8,862 in child support checks or refunds from a probationers case.  Prosecutors said Lang would forge the documents and cash in on the funds.

The alleged crimes date back to July 2009, with the most recent crime occurring in November 2011.  Lang retired in 2011 after 19 years with the Marion County Clerk’s Office.

According to the probable cause, Lang admitted to the crime, stating “I did do it and I want to make restitution.”  Police stated Lang said she would not argue with the facts and would return the thousands of dollars that was taken.
