New Market, Ind.

A Montgomery County student was transported in a medical helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health after an incident in a swimming pool Tuesday.

The boy, a fourth-grader at New Market Elementary School, was airlifted to the hospital following the incident at the South Mountgomery High School swimming pool.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the high school at approximately 1:30 p.m. on a report of a possible drowning.

Superintendent Dr. J. Bret Lewis told Fox59 the boy was at the high school for a pool party as part of a class reward. He said the boy was seen playing in the water and later found in the bottom of the pool.  Lewis said the boy was unresponsive when pulled from the pool.

Crawfordsville’s Journal Review reported other students in the pool were interviewed by Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies and later released to their parents.

The fourth-grader was conscious and alert when he was transported to the hospital, according to Dr. Lewis.  His condition is unknown at this time and his identity is not being released.
