Unattended candle likely cause of house fire

Indianapolis firefighters were called to the southeast side around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday night on a reported house fire.

When firefighters arrived in the 6000 block of East Hanna Avenue they found heavy smoke coming from a home.

IFD spokesperson Rita Burris says the homeowner left candles burning in his bedroom while working in the yard.

The homeowner's son noticed smoke coming from the home and found the bedroom on fire.

Indianapolis fire officials estimate the damage around $60,000. The home is a total loss.
