Pictures: Testing the perfect meat thermometer

This grilling season, instead of relying on poking, stabbing and old-fashioned guessing to tell us when our meat is done, it is time to step up and find the perfect meat thermometer. We tried several types and found a wide range of accuracy and features.

Word to the wise: When checking doneness, we found a combination of intuition and science works best. Use your senses in tandem with your tools, and with a little practice your steaks will come out to order every time.

This thermometer we hate to love, since it melted before our eyes when we used it on the grill. (In truth, most home thermometers aren't meant to be used on a very hot grill — steaks should be removed from the heat to be checked.) Easy to use and loaded with useful features (we love that it is waterproof and has an anti-microbial sleeve), this tool comes equipped with a neck strap so it can always be handy.
